You Have a Seven Run Lead.

It's over 100 degrees out.
Your starting pitcher has only given up one earned run over 6 innings, and thrown 80 pitches.

For the seventh inning do you:

A.) Keep your starter out there but start warming someone.
B.) Bring in your mop up guy to see if he can finish it out.
C.) Bring in your two most overworked relievers who will be needed down the stretch and risk injuries.

If you're Joe Torre, you choose: C - bring in Scott Proctor and Kyle Farnsworth, and then only when Farnsworth has to leave the game becaue of possible injury on a comebacker, you bring in your garbage-time long reliever, Ponson.

My choice would be B. If you don't use your long mop up guy in that situation, there's no reason to have one at all.

Amazingly, people in the media are still saying Joe Torre should be Manager of the Year.

I don't know why Lidle didn't come out for the 7th, but I sure as hell didn't want to see Ponson then. Toronto is one of the best hitting teams in the bigs and Sir Sid got torched for like 6 runs in 2 innings last time against them.
I'd rather for Proctor to be used to start the inning than having to be rushed in.
If Ponson came in, gave up some runs and the Yanks lost, people would be screaming that a 7 run lead isn't that big against Tor and that Proctor should have came in. Seems lose/lose - except the Yanks won!
Why is Ponson on the team anyway?

He's the long/mop up guy.

If he's on the team, and you don't use him when up 7 runs with 4 innings to go, just release him, as he serves no purpose.

There is absolutely no reason at all to use Proctor in that situation. Feel free to bring in Ponson and have anyone else warming up... it's mop up duty for crying out loud.

probably something to do with the fact that it was 120 billion degrees out
