Girardi Starting to Sound a Bit Like Torre

Picking "his guys" based on what he's seen with his own eyes, and not statistical data.

From Pete Abe:
"Girardi said this morning that if the season started tomorrow, Xavier Nady would be his right fielder based on what he did last season."

From Ken Davidoff:
"Xavier Nady, the Yankees' rightfielder, may be the star-laden team's most under-the-radar regular player. But with A-Rod out until mid-May after hip surgery, Nady might just become front and center in the lineup - especially against lefthanders, whom he has hit to a .308 career clip."

Nick Swisher is better than Nady in every aspect of the game. Nady's not bad, and he's got a career OPS+ of 108 that says he's slightly above average, but he had a career year last year (for Pittsburgh - his Yankee stats were right along with his career line) while Swisher had the worst season of his career (thanks in no small part to Ozzie Guillen). Not only is Swisher better with the bat (career OPS+ 112 - qand if you compare with Nady if you throw out last season it's not even close) but he's better defensively (UZR) and has a much higher ceiling. Nady's career high in homers (25) would be an average year for Swisher.

Let's just hope Giradi gets Swisher into the mix - he's too good to be left rotting on the bench while inferior players start in his stead.

Yeah and I'm sure Girardi hasn't seen anything in the spring that swayed his decision. Of course, that shouldn't matter since you can't learn by watching and baseball is played in fantasyland on paper.

He must be palying it on paper because swish is having a better spring than Nady as well. Nadys plate disapline sucks he has drawn no walks and swish has 9. DOnt forget that swish is a switch hitter as well. Oh and Nady looks like Adam Dunn running around the bases. I'll bet Nady will have like 1 SB this year and only if someone forgets to cover 2nd

Hey Rex, does Neyer live in Fantasyland too?

Maybe - I don't really care for his work so don't read him much. But anyone who thinks they can completely evaluate baseball based solely on stats without actually watching is an idiot and doesn't really know the game.
By the way, I'm not saying Nady is better than Swisher. I don't know and defer to Girardi's judgment over some internet blogger.

No, you're trusting Girardi's judgement over some internet blogger, nationally respected sabermatricians and columnists, and statistics.

The media are mostly a bunch of idiots because they don't look at data or statistics or do any sort of investigative reporting outside of their lazy agendas.

Neyer is the exact opposite - I've never slammed him on here. He backs up his positions.

Way to generalize. I dare you to prove that most are idiots.

I think a lot of internet bloggers are idiots because they don't watch the games and rely only on statistics (which I've learned, as someone who makes a living analyzing stats, you can often use to "prove" both sides of an argument)

yeah and I'm sure Rex Banner has a GPS monitor & hidden cams on Mike at all times, which is how he can definitively state that Mike doesn't 'actually watch' baseball games

I never said Mike doesn't watch any games, but I bet he sees the Pads more than the Yanks. That's not the point though. People who think they can just look at numbers to evaluate a player don't really know much about baseball yet often act like they are superior than the average fan.

FWIW I saw about 150 Yankee games last year. I have the MLB.tv and the Extra Innings packages.

Who said anyone is "just" looking at numbers? The point is that the average doesn't look at numbers at all, or looks at batting average or RBI or some other useless stat.

Yeah sure, I bet you did...and I watched over 200 Yankee games last year...see, I can make things up too.

Who said anything about average and RBI's? However, if I watch a game and see a guy rip the ball 4 times into outs or move runners over to help score runs or hold a guy on third because they fear his arm, I'll see his production - something that stats probably won't capture. I'd rather have a guy who helps wins games than one who VORP's you to death.

Rex needs to look up BABIP.

Good one, I've never heard of anything other than runs and RBI's. You should look up intangibles and championships.

Wow an internet blogger who cites another internet blogger! If it's on FJM (another site that mostly whines and bitches about other poeple) it must be true!

Ever wonder why these guys who bitch about baseball execs and managers AREN'T baseball execs or managers? Think there is a good reason?

It was a quoted NY Post article. But go ahead and attack the source and not the content.

Anyway, your position should also be that nobody should have an opinion about politics because they're not politicians. Ever notice how people who complain about politicians... aren't politicians?!??!??!!!!11!1!

People have the right to complain about politicians because their decisions ACTUALLY EFFECT THEM. Plesae tell me you're not comparing the two. You might not know nearly as much as you think about baseball, but I know you're smarter than that.

at what point did you justgive up and become 100% troll

Just because I don't agree with you, doesn't make me a troll. If that's the case, you're just as much a troll as me since you search for articles to disagree with.
