Jeter : Gold Glove :: Kim Jong Il : Nobel Peace Prize
We all know that most of the award voting in baseball is a joke, but is there anything more ridiculous than the Gold Glove awards? They gave Rafael Palmiero one when he'd played less than 30 games there and was a DH.
Now they award Jeter with another one, when not only do the defensive metrics say the opposite, but even with the naked eye it's readily apparent that Jeter's future away from the shortstop position is coming quickly.
He's obviously lost more than a step and these voters can't see past the intangibles.
Cano and Teix were among the deserving, though.Labels: awards, derek jeter, douchebag, gold glove, mark teixeira, robinson cano

Jeter's a Thespian
From an MLB release:A down-on-his-luck Derek Jeter was wandering the Coney Island boardwalk on Thursday afternoon, but it was all for show - the Yankees captain is playing himself in the upcoming movie, "The Other Guys."
According to a synopsis in the New York Post, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg play police officers who are taken off the streets after Wahlberg's character wrongly shoots Jeter in the leg after seeing him walk around with a bat.
The scene shot at Nathan's Famous on Thursday takes place years later, when a washed-up Jeter - wearing a ratty jacket, jeans and sporting stringy gray hair - encounters the two officers. The comedy is being directed by Adam McKay, who also provided "Anchorman" and "Talladega Nights."
Jeter has had a little acting experience in the past. Aside from numerous commercials - including a memorable 2003 credit card ad with George Steinbrenner - the shortstop had a cameo in the 2003 Jack Nicholson flick 'Anger Management,' and hosted 'Saturday Night Live' in 2001. You'd think Jeter would be an odd casting choice considering he's not really known for his range.
I dug up some photos. Enjoy.

Jim Rice Hates Today's Crazy Hair
Undeserving Hall of Famer Jim Rice on today's players:
"You see a Manny Ramirez, you see an A-Rod [Alex Rodriguez], you see [Derek] Jeter ... Guys that I played against and with, these guys you're talking about cannot compare," Rice said to Little Leaguers gathered in the cafeteria. We didn't have the baggy uniforms. We didn't have the dreadlocks," Rice said. "It was a clean game, and now they're setting a bad example for the young guys." Here's an example of a normal, respectable hairdo from Rice's era:

OK, I Give.
Derek Jeter has been somewhat maligned on this blog. Not so much personally, but moreso as it relates to the media perception of him.
Jeter has been easily the best player and most valuable Yankee this season. He's not the league MVP right now, but he certainly is for the team.
Way to step up, Captain.Labels: derek jeter, MVP

Trump Bus Lines Run Over A-Rod
Seriously, can't anybody give this guy a break? The latest bus-throwing incident comes from legendary baseball afficianado and great thinker Donald Trump:
Trump was in Arkansas on Thursday to speak at the Economics Arkansas luncheon. According to arkansasbusiness.com, Trump talked about Rodriguez, three-time AL MVP who has been criticized for his perceived inability to come through in important situations.
“He always plays bad under pressure,” Trump was quoted as saying. “Derek Jeter, he’s the greatest. People love Derek Jeter. Are those cameras on? This is going to get broadcast back home. Oh, now he’ll leave my building.”
A company controlled by a corporation controlled by Rodriguez bought an apartment at Trump Park Avenue in Manhattan for $7.4 million in July 2005.
Jeter bought an apartment in Trump World Tower, another Manhattan building, in 2001. This really has to be a joke. When has Trump ever faced real pressure? The guy was born into money, and used that to invest it into even more money.Labels: a-rod, bad toupee wearing reality show host douchebags, clutchitude, derek jeter

Jeter Takes an "Unnecessary Ultraviolet Broil"
Did anyone see the guy was.... sunbathing?? Hopefully Jay Greenberg is right on top of this one.
As the Post has taught us, such things are bad for your team, show a lack of preperation, and are an insult to children and puppies everywhere.
However maybe it's not a bad thing when instead of your wife and baby, you take a beer and a bottle of vodka with you.

Oh well, I'm sure somehow, they'll all blame A-Rod:

What Have We Learned This Weekend?
Looking back at the Fenway series, here are 10 things we've learned or confirmed this weekend:
- Other than Josh Beckett, the starting pitching really isn't very good. Schilling had a nice performance most of Sunday and Matsuzaka constantly worked out of trouble on Friday, but do either of them put any fear into a playoff team?
- Terry Francona has no faith in Eric Gagne. If he did, Papelbon never would have been asked for a 6 out save. That's why they got Gagne in the first place. At first I thought Tito was a genius in that he was going to use his best reliever in the highest leverage situation and then use Gagne to start the 9th, but that's not what he was planning to do.
- The Red Sox bullpen is not nearly as good as people think. Papelbon has been beaten twice by the Yankees this year (both final blows delivered by the amazingly un-clutch bat of Alex Rodriguez). The freefall of Hideki Okajima continues. Perhaps it's just a regression to the mean, as nobody expected him to be as good as he was in the first half. Still, going into the playoffs is a poor time to have your bullpen implode.
- Umpires are not good at their jobs. Despite clearly being safe, Johnny Damon was called out at first, which cost the Yankees at minimum one run on Sunday. On Friday, nothing Pettitte or Matsuzaka threw was being called consistantly a strike or a ball, and the zone seemed to shrink whenever men were on base. The umpiring for the entire series was disgraceful. Bud Selig absolutely needs to address the umpiring situation in MLB in teh off-season. Of course, he won't.
- 80% of Derek Jeter is still probably better than your team's shortstop. I hate to agree with Jon Miller, but it's true.
- Jason Giambi can be the most impactful presense on any bench of the playoff contenders. he really should be in the starting lineup, but Giambi has kept his mouth shut and produced when asked to pinch hit.
- Joba can handle the pressure. Sunday was really the first "big game" Chamberlain has been in, and he handled himself well. Yes, he gave up his first earned run, but it was on a 98 MPH fastball up above the strikezone. You can't do anything but tip your cap to Lowell and move on, and that's what he did.
- Sean Henn is a disaster. Even in a mopup role. Blech.
- The Red Sox need Manny Ramirez to return, and be Manny Ramirez again. Look, the Jacoby Ellsbury experiment is working out so far, but let's face facts - he had an unerwhelming minor league career and wasn't ever projected for superstardom. Ortiz needs protection in that lineup and in the postseason teams can completely pitch around him and nullify his power. Without Manny, the Sox offense is a lot less scary.
- Alex Rodriguez is a good ballplayer. It would be nice to see Posada hitting behind him more often though, but the Yankees have proven that you can't walk Rodriguez and beat New York. It's a recipe for disaster.

Captain Herpes vs. the Invisible Woman
Do I know if this is true? No. Is it possible? Sure. But hell, I'm reporting it anyway.
LA Rag Mag is reporting that Derek Sanderson Jeter, who was widely reported to have dated (and was repeatedly photographed with) Jessica Alba, infected her with an STD, namely herpes.
We’re going to apologize in advance to all the straight men out there, for ruining their Jessica Alba fantasies, but here goes…..Jessica Alba(before she was Jessica Alba) used to date Derek Jeter, the serial celebrity dater, who plays for the NY Yankees. Well, our source worked closely with Alba, and had to refill her Valtrex prescription for her on a regular basis! Guess who she got it from…that’s right…dirty Derek Jeter. So unless Alba, Scarlett Johannson (God in heaven, please no), Mariah Carey, Adriana Lima, Jordana Brewster, Vanessa Minnillo, a bunch of Miss USAs or Jessica Biel confirm this, I'll withhold judgement on the veracity of the claim. But still... interesting.Labels: derek jeter, jessica alba, STDs

Congrats on your Gold Glove, Cap!
Originally, the stat-head in me was aghast - how could Jeter be the best defensive shortstop in the AL again? Well, looking at the stats, it's not that much of a stretch, actually.
First, let's compare Jeter and his primary competition - Orlando Cabrera - on "traditional" defensive statistics:
Cabrera has an advantage in FPCT, obviously. However, his 454 assists in 731 chances to Cabrera's 347 assists in 583 chances show that Jeter was getting to more balls (I have to question whether luck comes into play, but I can't imagine 20%+ more chances simply due to luck). More chances, more mistakes. However, this isn't definitive enough for me. Yes, Jeter played in more games, and yes, the Yankees had a higher GB/FB ratio, but you can't discount the numbers.
But look at Range Factor. Cabrera, in fact had the lowest range factor for all qualifying shortstops in the American League. This, more than luck, explains the differences in the chances. In fact, Jeter was ranked #2 in the league in RF. Finishing first was Julio Lugo at 4.94. While impressive, Lugo is out of the GG conversation when you factor in his 24 errors and .968 FPCT.
So who else is there? Jhonny Peralta? Juan Uribe? Angel Berroa? None of them have the defensive stats to back up an award.
It seems Jeter is actually deserving this year, or at least a great case can be made for him. Sorry I questioned you, Cap.Labels: awards, derek jeter, gold glove, pics
