What's Wrong With This Picture?

I really can't believe how truly awful Yahoo!'s sports department and editing staff truly are. This kind of stuff just keeps happening.

The Best Players in NY

Saw this note on Yahoo! (who for once didn't post a ridiculous Jeff Passan "Yankees suck" article:
If you built one team from the guys who play in New York, Carlos Beltran(notes) would be your center fielder and Johan Santana(notes) your opening day starter. Yankees would be everywhere else. Maybe you platoon Nick Swisher(notes) and Ryan Church(notes) in right.
So.. is it accurate? Let's see.

SP: Santana edges Sabathia. Mets 1, Yankees 0.
CP: Rivera still has it over Rodriguez. Mets 1, Yankees 1.
1B: Even with a healthy Delgado, there's no doubt that Teixiera is the man here. Mets 1, Yankees 2.
2B: Cano over Castillo. No brainer. Mets 1, Yankees 3.
SS: Reyes was having a mediocre season even before his injury. Jeter edges him here. Mets 1, Yankees 4.
3B: What happened to Wright's power? The average is there but he doesn't seem to like Citi Field. A-rod hasn't been, well A-Rod yet this year, but for one season there's no doubt he's still the superior player... but this is still the closest call by far. You can't go wrong with either choice, but we'll give Alex the nod here. Mets 1, Yankees 5.
C: Posada over Schneider. Easiest choice so far. Mets 1, Yankees 6.
LF: Martinez or Sheffied? Doesn't matter. Damon's got them both beat. Mets 1, Yankees 7.
CF: Beltran is head and shoulders above Cabrera. Mets 2, Yankees 6.
RF: Swisher hasn't been as good lately as he was to start the season, but he's still got a .900+ OPS. Church is serviceable, but Swish beats him fairly easily. Mets 2, Yankees 7.

An argument could be made for Reyes I suppose and like I said, 3B is almost a coin flip, but it's really surprising that a team that shares a market with the Yankees can't even come close to competing by position.

Breaking News from Boston

RED SOX FANS BOO A-ROD

Boston fans were happy to stick it to A-Rod

While there are some in Boston who believe Mark Teixeira could rival Alex Rodriguez(notes) as the most hated member of the New York Yankees, Beantown fans did not miss on their chance to needle the All-Star third baseman, according to the Boston Globe.

According to the Globe, the booing Rodriguez received in the first was not over the top, but the crowd loved it when he popped out with Teixeira aboard, and then when he bobbled the glove-to-hand exchange and was late with a throw to second base that would have forced Mark Kotsay(notes) in the second inning. Rodriguez was charged with an error, which contributed to a four-run inning against A.J. Burnett(notes).

When Rodriguez came up in the fourth inning, the crowd seemed to be more into bashing him. A few "A-Roid" chants surfaced, as did the "Steroids! Steroids" cries. When Josh Beckett(notes) struck him out on a slider away, the crowd roared, the Globe reported.

Source: Boston.com
I don't know which is more odd... that this was a story written for the Boston Globe, or the fact that Yahoo! only reposted the parts about the booing and not the other half of the article which is about A-Rod's contributions since his return. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Yahoo! Sports is the biggest joke on the 'net.

When Your Headline Isn't Entirely Accurate

Yahoo! Sports is probably the worst edited site on the internet, as has been evidenced here multiple times. Typos are one thing, but giving a headline the opposite meaning from the intended is another. Case in point:
Nats' Johnson would be opposed to returning to New York

Nick Johnson has some fond and some no-so-fond memories of New York City.

The first baseman for the Washington Nationals broke in with the New York Yankees in the Bronx. He suffered a broken leg in a horrific collision three years ago at Shea. But the ex-Yank isn't averse to returning to New York if the Mets seek to acquire him from Washington as a possible replacement for injured first baseman Carlos Delgado(notes), according to the New York Daily News.

"I can't worry about rumors or any of that stuff, I just have to go play. If it happens, it does; if I'm here, great," Johnson said before going 0-for-4 in the Mets' 6-1 victory last night. "I don't deal with anything until it happens.... But I enjoyed (New York). Fans are into it, they want to win. It's all about winning and that's what I want to play for, to get that ring on my finger. I definitely had a good time while I was here those three years."

Panic! At the Stadium! Yankees 0-1! Girardi in Danger of Being Fired!

Oh Gerry Fraley... how I have missed you.
The seat already is getting warm for some managers

By Gerry Fraley - SportingNews 1 hour, 13 minutes ago

Joe Girardi gets it.

The New York Yankees spent more than $420 million on three marquee free agents this offseason with the intention of returning to the playoffs after a one-year absence. Those expectations squarely fall on Girardi.

"I don't necessarily think about those things," Girardi said during spring training when asked if he has the no-playoffs, no-job mindset. "But as you state the question, you're probably right."

That puts Girardi atop the list of managers most likely to be whacked.

Hamstrung by injuries, the Yankees went 89-73 last season and finished third in the American League East. They finished eight games behind the division-champion Rays and six games behind the wild card-winning Red Sox.

At times, Girardi seemed uncomfortable with the pressure that came with managing the Yankees. His biggest shortcoming is that he isn't Joe Torre, his serene predecessor who guided his teams to the postseason each year from 1996-2007.

"It would have been difficult for any manager," Girardi said. "He (Torre) was here so long and had relationships with everyone involved. I knew it wasn't going to be easy replacing him, and I never tried to replace him. I'm just glad I went through
the whole experience."

If Girardi is dumped, keep this name in mind for next season: Bobby Valentine. He plans to leave Japan after this season and wants to get back into the major leagues. Look for a not-so-subtle campaign promoting Valentine.

And the jumping the gun award goes to....

... Boston.com, Yahoo! and something called BetOnline.com for the breaking news story "Red Sox favored to win 2009 World Series".

There's a reason Vegas won't set odds on the 2009 season yet, and no respectible establishment will - nobody has any clue who will be on which fucking roster yet. vegas will start posting lines after the first of the year (and I'll buy my annual ticket at that time).

So either Yahoo! is hard up for stories, has an affiliation with BetOnline and is trying to promote it, or it's in bed with Boston.com (which would explain this year's heavy anti-Yankee stories). My guess is A and C.

The Season Boils Down to the Next Week and a Half

The Yankees enter play today 10 games out of the East. We can pretty much forget about that, for all intents and purposes. The hope here is the wildcard.

Currently, the Yankees stand 5.5 games behind Boston, and 4 games behind Minnesota for the wildcard, with 38 games left to play.

Boston has 2 more games at Baltimore, 3 at Toronto, then come to the Stadium for 3 against the Yanks before heading back to Fenway to take on the White Sox.

The Twins play the AL West: they have two more at home against Oakland, and then have a 4-game stretch at Anaheim against the Angels, 3 in Seattle, and 4 at the A's.

The Yankees have 3 games at Toronto, 3 at Baltimore, and then come home for 3 against both the Red Sox and Jays.

For the Yankees to have a realistic shot at making a real push, they're going to need to get hot, and fast.

Let's say they can go 4-2 over the next 6 vs. Toronto and Baltimore. In order to gain ground of course, the Sox and Twins will have to lose. Assuming they both simply play .500 ball, that's still only a game to a game and a half gain in the standings.

The bottom line here is to avoid needing to sweep the Red Sox next week, the Yankees will need to pick up a minimum of one game - preferably two - before the series with Boston begins on the 26th.

The Yankees' fate isn't in their own hands this year. They need to win games and also have other teams help them out.

A bad couple of series over the next week or so though and the season is over.

This is despite what notirious Yankee hater Jeff Passan has to say over at Yahoo!

Just a Tiny Oversight

Another gem, courtesy of our most recent whipping boys at Yahoo:
Correction: Yankees-Orioles story

BALTIMORE (AP)—In April 20 and April 21 stories about an injury to Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees, The Associated Press erroneously reported that Rodriguez and Josh Hamilton of Texas were the only AL players to start every game this season. Many other AL players had also started every game.

"Many other" indeed. These other American League players have appeared in every game their team has played. I am not claiming this list to be 100% complete, either:
Brian Roberts
Kevin Millar
Nick Markakis
Dustin Pedroia
Nick Swisher
Orlando Cabrera
Juan Uribe
Grady Sizemore
Ryan Garko
Edgar Reteria
Magglio Ordonez
Billy Butler
Alex Gordon
Mark Teahen
Jose Guillen
Chone Figgins
Gary Matthews, Jr.
Justin Morneau
Delmon Young
Carlos Gomez
Robinson Cano
Daric Barton
Mark Ellis
Bobby Crosby
Ichiro Suzuki
Rafael Betancourt
Jose Vidro
Jose Lopez
B.J. Upton
Carl Crawford
Ian Kinsler
David Murphy
Alex Rios
Lyle Overbay
Aaron Hill

So, Yahoo's guess to the number of players who have played in every game this year (2) was only off by a total of 35, which is within the margin of error (provided the margin of error is +/- 1900%).

We Making Typing Good

It's an epidemic that just won't stop. Major internet portal sites like Yahoo!, MSN, and AOL hire people to write sports articles (usually based on an AP, Reuters, or local newspaper story) and said people have no ability to form coherent sentences. Editors? Proofreaders? For suckers, they are!
Yankees out, Dodgers in, Lowell chase?
Saturday, Nov 17, 2007 10:42 am EST

The Boston Globe updated the negotiating status of free agent third baseman Mike Lowell Saturday and indicated the New York Yankees may longer be pursuing Lowell to play first base.

The Globe, citing a television source, said the Yankees appear willing to go with a plantoon between Jason Giambi and Shelly Duncan.

The Los Angeles Dodgers may decided to go after Lowell since the Florida Marlins are seeking three, high-level prospects for Miguel Cabrera.

Three sentences in the article. Four huge errors. Meanwhile, these overpaid hacks look down on the blogosphere.

I imagine a plantoon is a either some sort of a tiny banana, pair of trousers, platform boat, or Oliver Stone flick. I'm hoping trousers, because "the Yankees appear willing to go with a pair of trousers between Jason Giambi and Shelly Duncan" makes me giggle like a schoolgirl.
